A Rainy Biscuit Kind of Day

This rainy day streak we've been having has definitely put a damper on our pool visits, but we've been making the most of them with lots of movie nights, quiet time with books, and even a trip to the theater to see the new Incredibles.  And it was just that - incredible!

But one of my favorite rainy day afternoons was spent in our kitchen last week, whipping up a batch of Joanna Gaines' famous biscuits from the Magnolia Table Cookbook.  There's a reason this recipe is featured as the first one in her book.  They are not only absolute biscuit perfection, but they invite everything I love about being in the kitchen.  In a quiet, cozy house, Mila and I worked together, spreading dough with our palms, getting flour everywhere, and cutting out two dozen biscuit forms with a mason jar because we didn't have the right cookie cutter.  After I got her started, the process was easy enough to do almost entirely on her own, and I snapped a few pictures as she did her thing.  And while the warm biscuits, topped with fresh strawberries and a big spoonful of homemade whipped cream were pretty much as good as it gets, the experience of baking together was my favorite part.  Cooking or baking is so much more than preparing good food.  It's about connection and togetherness and feeling all the senses at once.  It's about feeling at home and making a mess and bringing people together.  It's our love language around here.
