Our Three Year Old

Cruz turned three about a month ago and I'm telling ya, life hasn't been the same ever since!  For those who told us the terrible twos had nothing on the threes knew exactly what they were talking about!  Our little spark seems to be driving in one of two gears lately - a little light bulb, learning new things and growing into this smart, witty, and sweet boy before our very eyes, and other times, a ball of fire that can't be reasoned with, no matter how deliberate we try.  Beau and I are yet again exploring unfamiliar territory as parents and while some days require us to exercise new amounts of patience we didn't know we had, we seem to be more astonished with his growth than ever before.  I remember growth spurts, when he seemed to be changing right in front of me, but the last few weeks have been really incredible.  He's growing into a little boy, one with friends, opinions, and knowledge that leave us shaking our heads in wonderment, or pulling our hair out in frustration constantly!

Some things to remember about Cruz at three...

...our bedtime routine.  One of the best and most frustrating parts of my day.  Cruz has been fighting going to bed lately, trying to reason with us with statements like "I'm not tired," or "It's not dark yet." (sorry buddy, welcome to daylight savings time, when it's now dark at 4:30).  Our answer to getting him up to his bedroom at night is by allowing him to bring things with him to bed.  Some nights, I tuck him in next to Tow Mater, a pirate sword, a DVD, and a tape measure.  He's never liked stuffed animals, however, lately, he's taken to his Cloud B Sea Turtle as a night light.  We cuddle up under his comforter, read 2-3 books, and talk for awhile before prayers, another potty break, a glass of water, and finally, sleep.  Exhausting, but nothing more rewarding than reading those books with his little head on my shoulder and his little sister kicking away to the sounds of my voice.

...bathtime.  Lately, an hour ritual because Cruz typically needs a 20 minute break in the middle to take care of some business on the potty.  It must be the warm water, which we typically have to make warmer when he's done his job because it takes so long.  We wrap him up in a towel, give him a toy catalog, and he kindly requests we shut the door to give him his privacy.  Twenty minutes later and a resounding, "I'm done!" and he's back in the tub, playing cooking show or giving his cars a wash.

...Cruz moved to the three year old room at daycare a little early, about two months before he actually turned three.  At first, I was a little hesitant about him being behind his peers; however, it's proved to be so good for him.  The things he can do blows my mind --- things like putting on his shoes or pulling up his pants, walking in a line to the gym or waiting patiently for his food to be served before eating.  He knows the months of the year in order, can tell me all about why the leaves fall off the trees during the fall, can recite the entire Pledge of Allegiance - with liberty and justice for all!

...Cruz has two best friends, Liam and Eli, and they're quite the characters at school.  Cruz and I also do Kindermusik with Liam and his mom on Tuesday nights and it's fun to watch them interact.  They're friends for sure, hugging and giggling one minute, and bickering and tackling the next!  I'm still getting used to this boy thing - the tackling, shooting, playing bad guys, etc., and am constantly asking "Where is he getting this stuff?" with the things he sometimes says.

...Cruz seems to get more 'boy' every day.  He loves monster trucks, race cars, football, and Batman, but Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater are still his favorites.  They are the only surefire bedtime companions, the reason Beau and I will sometimes find ourselves halfway under Cruz's bed at 2:30 in the morning, groggily attempting to stretch our arm to retrieve the necessary accompaniment.

...Cruz had his very first ear infection a couple of weeks ago.  For the first time, he was actually able to communicate what didn't feel right and we sprung into action to get our boy back to normal as soon as possible.  He was very brave at the doctor's office, but the antibiotics were a different story!

...Cruz is wearing 4T in most shirts and 2-3T in pants (he has a waist like his daddy), clothes he has quite the opinion over as of the last couple of weeks.  It's a new adventure every morning, as some mornings he'll be completely agreeable and the very next time I try the exact same outfit, he'll refuse.  I've started giving him options every morning, picking two things for him to choose and that seems to be solving the problem for now.

...Cruz has one week left of Soccer Shots at school, a soccer program for three year olds on Tuesday mornings.  I've been hearing a lot about Coach Marty and Soccer Shots, so I decided to sneak in and watch yesterday morning.  It was completely adorable to see this twenty-something kid interact with a group of toddlers.  It made me smile when Cruz kept looking over his shoulder to see that I was still watching him, and I was yet again amazed at how a group of three year olds can follow directions, do what they're told, and get something meaningful out of instruction.

...In addition to our school, we've also been blessed with an amazing children's ministry at church.  Cruz has the absolute best teaching staff in his room right now, and there is truly nothing better than seeing your child begin to form a relationship with his Savior.  Last Sunday, he came out of the room assuring us that "God is with you wherever you go," telling us the story of Deborah and how brave she was.  Seeing this network begin to form of all the people that will be part of Cruz's story is the most amazing thing - a calm reassurance that it indeed takes a village.

...Cruz loves to sing and dance, and rarely a day goes by without the three of us singing the ABCs, Old McDonald, Twinkle Twinkle, or the Johnny Appleseed prayer.  The prayers Cruz gets to recite at school have become our rotation at home, and I have no doubt that one of my fondest memories will someday be the three of us at the table before suppertime, arms stretched out like Superman, singing, "Thank you God, for giving us food..." to the tune of Superman.

...I can hardly wait to watch our boy become a big brother.  Although he still sometimes thinks she is currently residing in my boob, he seems to understand that our family is about to grow and that he will soon have a new responsibility.  He also seems to have a name picked out for her - one that may just be the one we decide to go with.  He just sort of started calling her that out of the blue and it seems to fit for now.

...I wish I could bottle up Cruz's sweet little voice and the little things that come out of his mouth all the time.  Times when he grabs my hand out of the blue, rubs the part between my thumb and index finger gently with his finger, and tells me, "yous my best friend, Mommy."  He is affectionate, soft hearted, and so sweet, and he melts me all the time.

There you have it!  A glimpse at our life with a three year old, one who teaches us patience, makes us smile, and melts our hearts every day.  Every age, every stage is a new adventure, one that stretches us in new ways and makes us all the more aware of the important work we're blessed to do.

Funny Cruz

Winter Break is coming to a close for me, and I've been so thankful for the extra days I've had to recharge, regroup, and just enjoy slow days at home with Cruz.  The two of us have spent a lot of time together and besides sleeping, I don't think we've spent more than an hour or two apart.  It was definitely busy, a little stressful, and there were times when I seriously thought I might pull my hair out.  But then, I would listen.  Listen to Cruz talk to himself as he played, or grab a gallon of milk out of the fridge for the 18th time, grunt and mumble, 'it's big,' to himself, then shut the fridge light off, and whisper, 'shh, babies sleeping,' like he does every time a light goes off.  And as I listened, I tried to soak up every part of him, thinking to myself that this life of ours and this stage we are living is so temporary.  And as stressed or stretched as I may feel sometimes, I know that someday I will think back to these days as some of the very best.  And that someday, when my kids are moved out and I'm old and gray with nothing to blog about, I will miss these days.

Even the ones where I might pull my hair out.

There seems to be a lot of laughter in our house right now, whether it's Cruz and his scrunched up face and fake laugh, or Beau and I laughing at the funny personality or quirky mannerisms of this child we created.

-Cruz says 'pweese' with everything.  What used to be a very firm, 'yes' or 'no,' has now turned in to a polite and adorable, 'yes, pweese' or 'no, pweese.'  We think it must be a daycare thing, as neither Beau nor I can take credit for this, but one thing is for sure --- it is extremely difficult to get upset or firm with our son when he puts a pweese at the end of his rebuttal...

Us: Cruz, will you put your toys away?

Cruz: No, pweese.

Us: Cruz, should we change your diaper?

Cruz: No, pweese.

Us: Cruz, can you stop coloring on the table?

Cruz: No, pweese.

After we've both melted to a puddle of mush and picked up the toys ourselves, we both silently question whether our son has merely picked up a habit, or is truly being polite, or has figured out yet one more strategy for parental manipulation.  Whatever it is, it's effective.  Most of the time.

-Beau's favorite thing Cruz does is what I call, 'The Ponderer.'  Beau asks Cruz a question, something like, 'Hey Cruz, what should we do today?' to which Cruz proceeds to point and look to the sky as if the world is full of possibilities, put a finger to the corner of his mouth, and say, 'hmmm...' in his best impression of Socrates.  He usually responds with 'choo choo.'  He's quite good at contemplating the universe and his existence, or maybe once again really good at making his parents laugh.

-Cruz LOVES helping us cook in the kitchen.  If he even hears the sounds of pots and pans, he is at our side in a matter of moments, pushing a chair to the counter top and desiring to be a part of every part of the process.  He thinks everything is 'chicken soooop' and loves to taste as we go.  Santa brought him this bath time toy and we think it's added to his love of cooking.  Now if only we could work on his love of eating what we're cooking.

-Cruz has this thing that he does where every time we turn off a light he puts his little finger to his mouth and whispers, 'shhhh, baby's sleeping.'  It's one of my favorite things he does.

-We read a lot around here, and there are a few favorites that Cruz can now read (or more so, recite) on his own.  I love how he waits and waits to say 'exercise' on the corresponding page of 'The Going to Bed Book,' and how he happily yells, 'Red Truck CAN, Red Truck WILL!' in this one.

-Cruz likes to be helpful in all he does, whether this 'helpful' means dumping a bowl of Cheerios on the kitchen floor, only to exclaim, "Oh no, big mess!' and run to the closet to grab the broom.  He also loves to pick up things he shouldn't --- a half-full glass of water on our end table, a tape measure that didn't get put away, or my camera, carry them ever-so-Cruzily, and present them to one of us, saying, 'he ya go, mom,' or 'he ya go, dad.'  Although these things prove about as helpful as Cruz 'helping' in the kitchen, we go with it because it's adorable and also good accountability, I guess.

When I think about how I would characterize this little sprite of mine, one of the things that sticks out the most is his innocent and genuine enthusiasm for the world around him.  He gets so excited about the smallest things --- a semi passing us on the interstate, a bus stopping in front of our house, or watching a movie with popcorn before bed.  I love this about him, and love that it makes me more aware of the happy around me, too.

Twenty for TWO

I'm not sure if it's because we are less than a week away from our little boy's birthday bash, or if I'm just feeling sentimental thinking back to the days leading up to Cruz's actual birth-day, but it seems that lately, our Cruz Man is growing from baby to little boy before our very eyes.  We were sitting at the dinner table the other night, and Beau and I both agreed that in a matter of a week, Cruz had changed and 'grown up.'  And while a part of him will always be my baby, it's exciting to see him discover new things and grow more and more independent and capable all the time.

Highlights to remember @ 'almost' two...

1. Cruz LOVES to read.  It's by far his favorite activity at home.  His consistent favorites continue to be his books about trucks, but we are also enjoying his many fall classics, especially Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin.

2.  He continues to amaze us with the small things he seems to pick up on and remember.  Just this afternoon, Cruz and I were crossing the street to get the mail when our neighbor, Jim, pulled into his driveway.  As he climbed out of the car, Cruz waved and greeted him with a very clear and friendly, 'Hi Jim!'  Both Jim and I were completely surprised, as we don't even see Jim all that often, but I'm pretty sure he was glowing all the way to his doorstep!

3.  In addition to Jim, Cruz is also a big fan of Mike, the maintenance man at daycare.  Every day when we walk into daycare, Cruz says 'Hi Mike,' and he was in complete awe the other day when we walked in to find Mike fixing the drinking fountain.  Cruz was mesmerized, and repeated 'Mike fix broken,' all the way down the hall.

4.  Cruz LOVES babies, and turns into a little sap if he has the opportunity to be near one.  He could be throwing a complete fit one moment, and turn into the sweetest angel within a second if there's a baby in the picture.

5.  Cruz is a toughie, something we owe to his daddy for teaching him to 'brush it off' whenever he falls down.  From the time he was six months old, he falls and immediately stands up, brushes his hands together (and sometimes on the grass if he's dirty), and goes on with his play.  Lately, however, I've been playing this little game with him, making a fuss over the slightest 'owie.'  We kiss it, we rush to get the boo-boo bunny from the freezer, and we fake cry a little, comforting each other with big hugs and lots of 'all betters.'  I know it makes Beau cringe, but it's turned into this fun little game we play and I swear Cruz understands the sarcastic undertones hidden in my response.

6.  Cruz is a big fan of Papa Curt.  I think it has something to do with my dad's 'big kid' appeal.

7.  Cruz has lately found a liking to his puzzles, and has independently mastered the only three we have.

8.  Everything is 'my.'  "My dog," "My i-Pad," "My juice," "My Elmo," "My book."  I've decided I should start instructing Cruz on proper use of articles in the future.

9.  Cruz talks, a lot.  He's just recently been incorporating lots of small phrases, and continues to surprise me with what he knows.

10.  Abby from Sesame Street is officially giving Elmo a run for his money.

11.  Cruz thinks everything is a hat.  From a leaf outside, to his sippy cup at dinnertime, to his potty chair before bath time, Cruz will try anything on and exclaim, "Haaat?" in a high-pitched question form.  The worst part is that his potty chair has an uncanny resemblance to a cowboy hat, and Cruz is fully aware that when we scold him and say 'yucky,' we are holding back tears of laughter.

12.  Cruz has quite possibly the best animal sounds I've ever heard.  His newest sound is the owl, and it's about as good as his chicken.

13.  Cruz does this thing that I like to call the 'grandma gail.'  A little hard of hearing, Grandma often responds to a question with a high-pitched, puzzled 'huhhhh???' Cruz does this too, and the only thing that would make this better would be a pair of dark rimmed spectacles sitting on the tip of his nose.

14.  I made the mistake of putting a box of scratch cupcakes in the back seat of my car on the way home from work the other day (you know, the brown cardboard with hot pink oval sticker adhered to the front).  Cruz whined and impatiently requested 'puffcake' the entire way home.  Can you say, photographic memory?

15.  Favorite song: The ABC Song or anything with drums or guitar.

16.  Favorite food: hot dogs, apples, yogurt, pizza, and berries (to which Cruz calls 'babies.'

17.  Cruz will eat an apple (skin and all) down to the very core if I'd let him.  It's the only food he'll actually take his time to eat.  Beau always laughs and says he eats as if he has ten older siblings!

18.  My favorite word Cruz says?  Bus.  I have to get this on tape, as it makes me smile every time he spots one and gets so excited.

19.  Cruz loves to pretend.  His recent favorite is playing store, where we order some kind of food, Cruz takes our money, prepares our plate, and brings us the imaginary dish.  He'll make just about anything, and everything is conveniently priced at 'eight.'

20.  He's a pistol, and likes to push our buttons and completely defy our requests sometimes (you know the just-keep-walking-and-they'll-follow-for-fear-we're-leaving trick?  Yeah, doesn't work for this one), he can turn on the charm in an instant, and is usually happy, content, and sweet.  I think he got the best of us all --- easy-going and lighthearted like his daddy, creative and independent like his mom, playful like his Papa Curt, and sweet and kind-hearted like his Grandma Kelly.  He likes his routine like his Grandpa Ray, lights up a room of full of people like his Grandma Mary.  We're so proud of the little person he's becoming, and he lights up our world and gives us so many reasons to smile.

It's hard to imagine our family without this little sprite.

A Growing Boy

Since Cruz was born, I've kept a quick log of new discoveries, milestones, and memories on my computer screen, compiling his growth each month in a blog post.  These blog posts are some of my most favorite to look back on, as they give such insight into what we were thinking and going through as parents at that time, not to mention, help us remember those little things that are so easy to forget.  Babies change so fast, and with each new change brings excitement, a little apprehension, and so much happiness.  These posts are found under the 'Cruz Month to Month' tab below the blog header.

I've often wondered, however, just how long I can keep up with these posts, and when it's a good time to stop documenting those month to month milestones.  It's like when do stop communicating your child's age in 'months' and just settle on 'one and a half,' or 'two'?  After all, will I still be recording Cruz's 'month' post when he's 92 months old???

So, when we returned home from Mexico the day before Cruz's 20 month 'birthday,' I decided to skip the milestone post and instead focus on unpacking, laundry, and reconnecting with the little man I missed so much.  And now, as irony would have it, I think Cruz has changed and grown more this month than most in the past.  I swear we left a baby at Beau's parents on June 6th, and returned home to a toddler!  I'm blown away every day at his level of skill, mobility, and smarts, and can really see a clear glimpse of who he's going to be as a young boy.  It's so amazing to watch toddlers at work (and a little frustrating at times), and I feel honored to get to provide him with new territory to explore and new learning to discover every single day.  It's exhausting work, but the most rewarding I've ever encountered ;)

So, quite possibly for the last time (we'll see), my Cruz Man at 20 months...

1.  You are talking so much more than a month ago.  I swear in two weeks' time, you understand every thing we say to you and try your hardest to tell us what it is you want to say.  You answer every question we ask with a causal 'yea,' or a 'no,' and nod your head when we are spot on at figuring you out.  Some of your favorite words are book, bug, elmo, it's broken, bus, birds (as in Angry Birds), banana, pizza, truck, shoes, a hat, night-night, and applegate (we still aren't sure what you mean, but you say this all the time).

2.  You are a pro at animal sounds, and make us laugh with your deep-pitched lion roar, and your very realistic chicken cluck.  You beat your hands against your chest and chant when we request a monkey, and you even slither like a snake.

3.  You count, but seem to go from one, to two, to three, to nine!  It's pretty adorable, especially when you hold up the corresponding fingers when you're about ready to 'jump' from your anywhere chair.

4.  One of my absolute favorite new 'things' you do is play pretend.  Where kids pick this up is beyond me, but you have these cute little sound effects when you play that are just so 'boy.'  The other day, I caught you filling up the gas tank on one of your play cars, and you were making the 'ssss' sound for the gas.  I was always good at pretending when I was little and sure hope you exercise that imagination, too.

5.  You are a water rat!  We've been to the pool four times this summer, and soon you'll be diving off that board!  You watch the big kids and think you can imitate everything they do, from putting your face in the water, to wanting to go down that crazy slide!  You have a few years until that, but in the meantime, I'm sure you'll keep this mama on her toes chasing you around!

My beach bum...

6.  You've taken to eating again --- like a piggie!  You try lots of new foods, and eat adult-sized portions of the foods you love.  You've stolen your father's heart with your love of the meat group, but haven't impressed him with your love of ketchup and hot dogs!  You would dip anything in ketchup if we gave you that option!

7.  You are a big 'helper' and like to be a part of EVERYTHING.  Brushing your teeth is a big hit, and you even like to help me put lotion on my legs!  You help me water the flowers every night (making sound effects for the hose sound), and love to copy your daddy, whether he's grilling on the Big Green Egg, or fixing or putting something together.

Helping in the garden...

8.  You are a music man, and have been since you were a baby.  Your favorite toys are your drums and new kitty piano, and we're amazed at the rhythm you seem to have.  You cock your head to the side like Stevie Wonder when you're really feeling the music, and stick your tongue out when you concentrate (Beau says this is a Jorgensen trait).  Our weekly dance parties in the living room to a music station on TV are so much fun!

I love this picture below so much because it looks like you are reading music.  We went to feed Grandma and Grandpa Hoodjer's kitties on Friday, and you immediately went to work on the keys.  You did this all on your own --- opened up a church hymnal and started to play, keeping your eyes on the music at all times.

9.  You fake wimper and search for 'owies' on your arm just so you can have your boo-boo bunny and get a kiss from mom.  We play this game a few times each week.

10.  You LOVE to read your books, and have especially developed a love for How Do Dinosaurs Play With Their Friends.

11.  You have officially learned the word 'mine' and say it a little too frequently sometimes.  You definitely DEFINITELY know what you want, and when it's something you can't have (like a candy cane you found before dinner), you throw a pretty good fit!  You no longer want to sit in the front of the cart at Target, and absolutely hate to wear your cute brown flip flops.  You are, however, pretty easy to redirect and distract, and it's a constant game we play ;)

12.  My favorite phrases you say are 'ohhhhhh, man!' and 'it's broken.'

13.  You continue to charm your way through life and get quite a lot of attention out in public.  We call you 'the mayor' because you're always reaching out to the crowd, waving, and offering a confident 'hi' to them.

14.  You're a dare-devil, especially when you dive-bomb off the top of your anywhere chair or dive head-first into your baby pool in the backyard!

15.  You continue to be in love with all things Elmo.

Eggs and Elmo on a Saturday morning...

16.  You're working on your two-year molars, evidenced by your usual signs...

17.  You not only dance, but you're proving to be quite the singer, too.  When I ask what songs you want to sing, you always say, 'ummm???' and then put your index finger to your mouth signalling the 'shh' sound for the last verse in The Wheels on the Bus.  Thanks to daycare, you know all the actions to that one, This Little Light of Mine, The B-I-B-L-E, and Row Row Row Your Boat.

18.  I can finally say you've become a bit of a mommy's boy.  Lately, when I'm in another room, I hear you chirp, 'mom,' throughout the house, and your eyes light up when you see me.  This, of course, makes me want to melt (and rub it in a little since you've been quite the daddy's boy before ;).  And sometimes, out of nowhere, you cup your little hands around my face or wrap your arms around my neck and shower me with kisses...it's precious.

19.  You snore --- well, kind of.  The other night as Dad was putting you to sleep, he told you to go 'night night.'  Seconds later, you were laying there with your eyes closed, pretending to be asleep by a loud, recognizable snore.  We laughed, of course, and you proceeded to 'snore' for the next half hour!  You definitely learned this trick from Daddy ;)

20.  Speaking of sleeping, it's been a little tricky to get you to sleep lately.  I think it's time for a new room, a new bed, and a new start :)

Happy 20 months, Cruz, better late than never, I guess!

19 Firsts for 19 Months

Happy 19 Months, Cruz Bennett!  You're getting closer to two than one, and it's making mama's heart hurt!  Quit getting so big!

You've hit some pretty impressive milestones this month.  It was fun to jot down new 'firsts' for you this month - you have done a lot, little one.  It helps that you are pretty much game for anything --- along for the ride.  I'm convinced I would like to clone a little copy of you at this age and keep it in my pocket as a reminder of our cuteness.  Or just be able to glance in my rear view mirror every now and then and see you rocking out to Gotye.  Oh, to see the world through the eyes of a child...

Here are 19 'firsts' for 19 months...

1.  you say thank you, which sounds more like 'neh neh,' but it has the right inflection
2.  you started saying 'what's this?' at everything.  Your curiosity has always been high, but the world beyond our house has expanded it tenfold
3.  you took your first shower...with dad.  We decided it is a quick way to get you clean if we're in a pinch, but your dad said it took the 'no privacy' feeling to a while level.
4.  first play date with your best friend, Harper.  You blew bubbles and drank about five capri-waters.
5.  you started saying Harper's name this week.  Every morning, we say, 'Cruz, who are you going to see today?,' and you reply with 'Harper.'
6.  first hamburger - with ketchup.  You loved it.
7.  we started praying together before bed.  I ask you if we should say your prayers, and you immediately fold your little hands and bow your head.  It completely melts my heart.
8.  first Oreo Cookie Shake at Applebees.  We ate there Wednesday night and didn't know it was kids' night.  You had 99 cent chicken fingers and fries and sucked down a mini oreo shake in about five slurps.

10.  at daycare, you sleep on a cot in the afternoon, and usually take 2 and a 1/2 hour naps.  I wonder how you'll do in a hammock this summer ;)
11.  you play a mean tune on your elmo guitar.  I have no idea how you know how to hold it just right, but you've got it down.

12.  you love to count - nuh, nuh, nuh, GO!
13.  you're not a good veggie eater, but have taken to these little Gerber squeeze packets of veggies.

14.  you have graduated to Size 5 diapers!
15.  you planted your first garden, dug your hands in your first pile of dirt, and had your first 'shower' under the sprinkler setting on the hose!  I think you're going to love the pool this summer.
16.  you now go down and up the stairs on your feet - to you, 'up' means up and down---you recite it on every step, whether we're going down or up!
17.  you had your first lesson in how to clean your hands outside - dad style.  Next, we'll be covering peeing outside
18.  your first dollar bill - given to you by a nice elderly man at the greenhouse last weekend.  You thought you were big stuff.
19.  first killer pair of shades you'll actually wear - I'd wear 'em too if I looked this cool!

Happy 19 Months, Dude!  You make our world totally awesome :)
