Our Hawaii Paradise | Part 3

We were anxious to get to the beach on our second full day in Kauai and had done our research ahead of time when it came to the best beaches to spend our time at.

We had been in Kauai for less than 48 hours at this point, but had already realized that the best beaches on this island were the ones that required a hike!  Sure there are plenty of public beaches with public parking, restrooms, and several people on the sand, but there were also the kind that made you feel as though you had stopped onto the set for the hit TV series, Lost.  And these were our favorite ones.  Secrets Beach required a steep downhill jaunt to get to where we were going, but this was part of the allure of it all.  The jungle scenery on the way down was epic and by the time our toes finally hit the sand, we were ready to catch some waves!  Also, Beau slipped on our styrofoam cooler and smashed it to bits, so we had an excuse to drink our cold water while it lasted!

The beach was large, quiet, and absolutely gorgeous!  On one side, we could see the lighthouse we had just visited in the distance, and on the other side were big rock formations that formed little tidal lagoons to swim in.  While everything we read said the waters at Secrets Beach aren't the most swimmable, they seemed fairly calm that day and we wasted no time hopping in and getting wet.

Probably my favorite memory from Secrets Beach was when Beau discovered this perfect little "bed" of lava rocks in the middle of this makeshift lagoon pool.  The tide must have been low because we could sit there in this little cave and the water waves would only push in every ten minutes or so and just get enough to water our legs.  Beau was very proud of his discovered treasure and we even facetimed the kids to show them what we were up to.  They were playing with the neighbors outside so they didn't have much time for us!

And if there's anything better than stopping for some fresh seafood and beers after the beach, I don't know what is!  Another thing we loved very much about Kauai was the emphasis on small and local - it was felt everywhere we went!  Kauai loves its food trucks and we often had a difficult time narrowing where we wanted to go and what we wanted to taste!  The little town of Kileau was just a few minutes from our bed and breakfast and had the most fun town square with a bakery, some great merchandise stores, an outdoor library, and several food trucks.  We ordered Hawaiian poke, some Kona Coast beers, and shopped at the super cool Aloha Exchange while we waited for our lunch.  If only the weather was 75 degrees everyday in Iowa - we would open up a food truck and bring some of the local island charm to the Midwest!
