My favorite Christmas memory from our year, and quite possibly my favorite in a lot of years, was our Christmas afternoon hike at Hartman before hitting the road for our Hampton Christmas with Beau. While we didn't get our Christmas snow this year, we did have near 60 degrees on Christmas day. It felt like spring outside. So we saved our presents for the cold and left the house early to take advantage of the weather at one of our favorite places for a little fresh air and a really great hike.
We weren't the only ones who had a similar idea for their Christmas afternoon. We met family after family on the trails and everyone was so happy. Lots of Christmas greetings were exchanged and I just couldn't wipe the smile from my face. A white Christmas sure is pretty, but I think I could get used to opening presents and spending the rest of the day outside sans coats!
But what was really special about the whole experience was the fact that our favorite little lake and all the surrounding streams were still completely frozen over. So instead of taking the familiar trails, we took the streams instead, skating on our boots and talking a lot about Frozen II and that enchanted forest.
And this place that we love equally as much no matter the season we visit seemed to look even more beautiful on this magical Christmas day. It's like everything was in soft focus - the sky was the sharpest blue, the frozen water sparkled and left prisms of ice under the surface, and wispy white clouds contrasted against the dark logs that bordered the lake. It felt really special to be there on Christmas and I remember thinking I could have stayed in that day forever.
