The Longest Spring Break Comes to an End...

After five and a half months of being together every day, we all spread our wings and flew to new places this morning.  They are off to conquer 1st and 4th grade!  My house is eerily quiet, but I've got a grateful heart for the promise of a new school year, new things to learn and discover, and wonderful teachers to cheer these brave kids on.  And at the end of the day, if things change and these little birds end up back at home, I know we'll find joy in that, too.

There they are!  They been each other's biggest fan and champion the past five months and I pray that continues into this school year as well.  Cruz's teacher, Ms. Draus, moved down to 1st grade this year and happens to have Mila this year.  Two years in a row of Ms. Draus made for one happy return to school.

My sensitive, silly, and smart 4th grader!  He has his first male teacher this year, Mr. Batterson, and I'm excited to hear about all the new things he learns.  He's nervous because he's heard rumors that Mr. Batterson may not find his jokes and sense of humor all that funny, but I have a feeling he'll win him over in no time. ;)  I prayed for his new school year last night before bed and he gave me the longest and biggest hug.  And was up bright and early at 6 ready to help me make some pancakes.  I love him, I love him, I love him.

And then there's this girl, off to 1st grade with a little more confidence and the same overflowing joy.  Unlike Cruz, I woke her up at 7:30, her hair in her face and drool down her mouth!  She got the teacher she was hoping for, some of her sweet little besties in her class, and is only nervous about learning to read chapter books.  She also made sure I let her wear shorts under her dress because cartwheels.  She gave us both the biggest hug this morning and I heard her say I love you to Cruz as they parted ways at the front door.  I love her, I love her, I love her.

Although I must admit it felt a little like the twilight zone dropping our kids off and seeing so many masks and face shields, I'm praying it is a step in the right direction toward healing and normal for our kids.  Starting this school year with a full heart of great memories from so much home that will launch them into the world well.  And land them right back here safe and sound.
