When does one become a groupie?! Beau and I have long known one of our favorite ideas of date night is a live concert, and have made lots of good memories seeing many of our favorite bands and artists together and with friends through the years. We've seen Mumford and the Avett Brothers three times, the Lumineers twice, and Beau informed me this summer that he's officially seen Maddie Poppe more than any other band we've seen. Groupies! And then there's Brad and Kate, our favorite local band we've seen enough to know their set list. Definite groupies! But earlier this year, we joined some friends at SingleSpeed on a random weeknight to watch The Talbott Brothers, a brother duo that is right up our alley in music and style. We had such a fun night, heard some really great music, and may have made friends with these sweet guys from Nebraska. We also ran into some friends that night at SingleSpeed who were there with their kids on a random weeknight after hockey practice. They were quick fans of the Talbott Brothers, too.
Imagine our surprise when we received a Facebook invite that they would be coming back to the Cedar Valley for another concert in July, this time a house concert. We made plans with the Shaws months in advance and enjoyed a perfect summer date night last week. We had vodka martinis and the best tapa spread at the new Bar Winslow, dodged a romantic summer downpour as we made our way to Washington Street to the quaintest little brick house, spotted the guitars and top hats through the living room window, and snuck in the back door with a bottle of rose and a growler of ipa. And while we may have been a little unsure of all things house concert before the night started, we were all big fans by the end of the night. The intimate setting of being in a cozy home listening to music was pretty wonderful! There were less than fifty people there sprinkled throughout the house - high school girls on stair steps, middle aged people sipping wine from the couch, a few people lingering in the kitchen around the hors d'oeuvres, and it all felt so easy and inviting. We hung out for awhile afterwards, long enough to learn the Talbott Brothers would be back to Iowa in November (road trip!), and then went for a night cap at the Blue Room.
It was our kind of date night and we look forward to following the Talbott Brothers to groupie status. They're worth a listen - so much talent!
