We solemnly swear we are up to no good. Easily one of my favorite parts of our new home-school routine occurs every morning just after 8 when Cruz and I read a few pages of Harry Potter together. I make a yummy coffee, curl up somewhere comfy, and we start our day getting lost at Hogwarts together. We've been slowly making our way through the series for a couple years now and every time we finish a book, we celebrate with a movie night. And being that we have a little more time on our hands lately as well as a lot more time at home, we spent last Friday going through my old birthday party keepsake box to recreate some of the birthday magic from Cruz's Harry Potter party a few years ago. It was a dreary, rainy Friday and we pretty much took the day off from school and took a little field trip to Hogwarts instead.
We turned just another day of quarantine into quite the adventure. I strung outdoor lights across the living room, set up pretty much every white pillar candle we own, hung floating candles from the mantle, made some owl cupcakes, and created a pretty great snack table of Huffle"puffs", pretzel "wands", Burt's Every Flavor Beans, and sour worms. In about an hour's time, our living room had transformed before our eyes and lifted our spirits in the most magical of ways.
The rest of the day was so fun. We spent most of it dressed in our Gryffindor cloaks and our signature dark-rimmed glasses. Mila spoke in her best British accent, we performed spells on stuffies and Dad while he was trying to work in the basement, and ordered our first takeout of quarantine - delicious Tony's pizza. Then we turned all the lights off, spread the kids' sleeping bags on the floor, and watched what we think is the best of the Harry Potter books yet. And in the words of our favorite headmaster,
"Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of time, if one only remembers to turn on the light."
