Our new little pumpkin...

Two years ago, a silly looking Joe Dirt and skimpily-clad referee joined forces to celebrate a Halloween night that included a haunted house, some karaoke, and a few margaritas in the basement of El Mariachis, a little Mexican dive on College Hill, owned by none other than, Mama Mariachi. We played pool, danced with friends, and took pictures with other costume-laden strangers. This year, Halloween looked a little different at our house. It involved a pair of warm leggings and my favorite mukluks. Sitting on the floor, clasping warm bowls of chicken and noodles, snuggling a baby dressed in a white fleece sleeper with little orange pumpkins, and stopping to pause ‘Scared Shrekless,’ or ‘The Office,’ to grab a burp cloth, warm a bottle, or pump a fresh one. Yes, Halloween looked a little different at our house this year.

This weekend, we celebrated Cruz’s first holiday and we celebrated in style. Fall is one of my favorite times of year for so many reasons. I love the weather, the colors, the clothes, and especially the food. Each year, I try to outdo Martha Stewart by cooking as much comfort food as possible. Crock pot roasts and soups, breads, bars, cider, and anything pumpkin. This year, I wondered if I’d have the time or the desire to continue to cook after having a baby. And thanks to many special friends at Price Lab School, I haven’t needed to think about grocery lists for the past two weeks, as we’ve had meals brought to our house almost every night. Thursday night, however, I rediscovered my inner Pioneer Woman, thus beginning of weekend of wining, dining, and baby lovin’.

Home-Baked Cookies and Milk.

Although Cruz only enjoyed one of the two for his first Halloween, he did enjoy his first of many experiences cooking in the kitchen with his momma. I celebrated missing a Thursday night of parent/teacher conferences by spending some time with my boys in the kitchen. We filled frosty pint glasses with Sam Adams’ Winter Ale and sweet red wine, stuffed babies in oversized lambie chairs, and baked warm, gooey, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip cookies. The dimmed cabinet lights and the click click click of the kitchen timer created the perfect combination for Cruz to sleep through my baking spree. Beau made some life insurance calls and I filled baking sheet after baking sheet with my favorite secret recipe.

Nap time.

Beau decided to call it a no-stress Friday and cut out of work a little early. I ran a few errands and returned home to this…

So I made this…

Pumpkins.

Last year, Beau escaped Halloween without having to carve pumpkins with his holiday-obsessed wife. This year, we sat as a family in the middle of the kitchen floor, got arm’s deep in pumpkin goo, and carved Cruz’s first ever jack-o-lantern. Then, much to Beau’s distaste, I attempted to strip down Baby Cruz and put him in his very first jack-o-lantern to further torture him with another photo-op. The cold, slimy pumpkin intestines were nothing close to Cruz’s favorite Gap blankie, and before I could even stuff his little legs into the pumpkin, I realized it was not a good idea. We stuffed him into a bathtub of suds instead, then captured a few pictures of a sleeping baby and his personalized pumpkin.

Tricks or Treat.

Saturday afternoon, we took Cruz to my mom and dad’s to experience his first night of trick-or-treating. Although the wind was a little too cold for baby ears, we managed to get a few pictures of Cruz in his first Halloween costume. Although Cruz and Charly looked pretty cute in their puppy and penguin costumes, my little hot box didn’t last too long in his costume. All the pictures and clothes changing proved to be a little too much for our little puppy, so after his first bottle with Daddy, Cruz fell asleep for the remainder of trick-or-treating. We laughed at Charly as she attempted to get in on her own candy fun, snuggled with a sleepy Cruz, and enjoyed a night of tricks, treats, beef burgers, and cheesy potatoes. Mom was in seventh heaven to have both of her grandbabies at home and it was fun to see evidence of just how much our family has grown in a short year.

Five Little Pumpkins.

Call me a bad mom, but since Cruz has been born, I haven’t read one book to him. Sunday, we made up for it. Grandma Kelly gave Cruz a couple of Halloween board books in honor of his first Halloween and together, for about a half hour on the recliner, we memorized Five Little Pumpkins. Cruz was wide eyed and alert, listening to the rhymes and concentrating like a bookworm on the fat little pages filled with orange pumpkins. He especially loved the “oooooooooooooooo went the wind, and out went the light” chant, almost piercing his little lips in an ‘ooo’ motion to match mine.

Naps with Uncle Barbiturate.

As it turns out, Uncle Gabe really does live up to the namesake he gave himself. Gabe and Gina came Sunday morning to spoil Beau and me with an amazing lunch, and spoil Cruz to sleep with lots of cuddle time. While Beau and I stuffed ourselves with asiago and prosciutto stuffed chicken and caprese salad, Gabe and Gina got their baby fix with a happy little Cruz.

Superheroes and Award-winning Chili.

Every year on Halloween, our little neighborhood turns into a scene straight out of a Halloween movie. Costumes of all shapes and sizes parade up and down the streets, followed by parents pulling wagons, carrying flashlights, and rehearsing the common lingo of, “please,” “thank you,” and “trick-or-treat,” with their littles. This year, Fleur Drive was in extra good hands with the presence of three awfully cute superheroes.

It was Mom and Dad’s turn to help us with our round of trick-or-treaters, and once again, we snuggled with a sweet baby, and stuffed our faces with yummy fall comfort food, including Beau’s award-winning chili, and my favorite turtle corn. We sipped cider, listened to Uncle Taylor tell us about his gum-stuck-on-shoe costume, and filled and refilled our candy bowl as Iron Mans, princesses, dragons, and ladybugs flooded our porch and scared our kitty.

And as the last trick-or-treater stuffed his little gloved fist into our candy basket and the light in Cruz’s very first jack-o-lantern faded away, we rocked an exhausted little baby to sleep.

It was our first holiday with a baby and I definitely learned a lot. While simple traditions like carving a pumpkin may take a little longer, and trips to family may require a little more packing, babies have a way of making the holidays, like life, just a little bit sweeter and a lot more fun. It’s two little hands peeking from a little spotted suit, and a sweet little scrunched face peeking from under a puppy-faced hood that made this Halloween complete.

And blew the socks off of Mama Mariachi's margaritas any day of the year.

Happy FIRST Halloween Baby Cruz.

Pep talk...

Hi peanut,

We've made it to 38 weeks, less than two weeks from my due date.  I'm getting more and more prepared, more and more anxious to see you, hold you, and try my hand at this new mommy thing.  About a week ago, I decided it was time for you to come out.  I had waited long enough, had been pregnant long enough, and it was time to get on with things.  I would say I'm usually a pretty patient person; however, I once heard that 'patience is the art of hoping,' and well, I was really hoping for a baby this week!

After today's appointment, however, I learned that it's really not up to me when this whole birth thing happens.  Weekly doctor's appointments are so much fun, as I wait in anticipation all week to see how much closer we are to D-day.  I like to call this 'cervical suspense.'  Today's appointment, however, was like one of those really suspenseful movies that ends about 10 minutes too soon.  The ones where you stay in the theater a little longer, watching all the credits, hoping the director will turn around and yell, 'Gotcha!' before revealing another, more satisfying ending.

What I learned at my appointment today is that you are warm, snuggly, and content exactly where you are.  I'm not sure if it was the meal at Texas Roadhouse last weekend, or the dreary weather we've been having lately, but you are showing no strong signs of wanting to exit the ute anytime soon.  This is okay, as I've always envisioned an October baby, and have final work to complete at school; however, let's not get too carried away, deal?  I mentioned I was a patient person; however, your daddy is terrible at waiting.  In fact, he would like to remind you that he would really prefer a buddy to watch football with this weekend.  And the Bears have looked quite impressive so far this season!

Other news to report from this side of the ute?  Your momma has been a little emotional lately, my belly button is now half in, half out, and new shows started on TV this week.  Fall is in full swing in the Jorgensen household, with a Pepsi roast in the crockpot, a squash on the countertop, and mums planted outside.  I ordered you a Halloween costume last night and can't wait to see you in it.

As I wait in suspense for another week to go by, I want you to know how incredibly loved you are.  You have given our lives a whole new meaning and for that, I can wait.  Your birth day will be here soon enough and until then, it's about savoring the last few days of carrying you, feeling you move, and having your sweet little companionship with me always.

I love you, always and forever...

Mom

The three of us, 38 weeks pregnant.  Your dad is a goof ball.

My Autumn Fix

It's here.  The crispiness of a welcomed cold front after a perfect late summer rain.  The small of a pumpkin spice candle illuminating from a sparkly clean countertop.  Zucchini bread baking at 325.  Little twinkling lights in between gold, burnt orange, and olive green garland.  A slow cooker full of tortellini, marinara, and Italian sausage.

Fall found its way into my house last night.  I love how a simple lit candle motivates me to clean the kitchen, fill the crockpot, and bake bread.  I love how a 65 degree high in September moves everyone to break in their blue jeans and sweaters, but a 65 degree high in April is matched with shorts, tank tops, and flip flops.  It's one of the reasons I relish in Iowa's four seasons.  We never quite have a chance to take a season for granted.  It makes the first bike ride of spring, the first ear of sweet corn of summer, the first football game of fall, and the first cozy movie night of winter better...

and better...

and better...

I know I always say this, but fall is my favorite season.  I think I like it for its simplicity.  Summer is busy, Christmas is expensive, and spring is too short, but fall is just right.

Fall is an oven-baked pot roast, complete with carrots, potatoes, and a glass of Chardonnay.

Fall is a pan of homemade, melt-in-your-mouth, chocolate chip cookies, fresh out of the oven on a Saturday afternoon, with the sounds of the Iowa Hawkeyes filling the space in the background.

Fall is the crunch crunch crunch of leaves under shoes.

The warmth of a cinnamon spiced cappuchino from Kwik Star.

The first roaring fire,

and the look of three pumpkins placed perfectly on the front porch.

And with every new season, comes a wish list.  Mine is a little lengthy this year...

1. Make every recipe from the William Sonoma Comfort Food Classic Cookbook…and make my dishes look as good as the pictures in the book!
2. Plant some mums in place of my dead summer flowers
3. Begin a love affair with The Pioneer Woman. I have a feeling we could be great friends.
4. Eat lots of Honeycrisp Apples. In breads, and cakes, and pies, with peanut butter, and caramel…
5. Find a super cool Halloween costume for our new little pumpkin
6. Make banana bars with cream cheese frosting that runs picture perfect off the edges
7. Sit on the deck on a Sunday morning with a newspaper and a mug of cider
8. Snoop around in some gift shops
9. Hibernate under tents of blankets and sheets, chairs and chip clips
10. Build a fire and snuggle
11. Pumpkin bread
12. Have breakfast for dinner
13. Carpet picnic and movie date night
14. Road trip to Northeast Iowa with Baby J in tow. Cozy blankets, a stroller ride, leaves, wine, and apples!
15. Keep crocheting
16. Marshmallow popcorn and True Blood...it's morbid how much I love this show
17. Hooded sweatshirts, a mittened hand clenching a Styrofoam cup of cocoa, and a chilly football game
18. Bake an apple crisp…or two.
19. Clean out my junk drawer
20. Wild rice soup. Chicken tortilla soup. Beau’s chili.
21. Make s’mores by the fire…outdoor or indoor
22. A new pair of pajamas and a new pair of mukluks
23. Fresh flannel sheets
24. Go to a pumpkin patch…for real.
25. Decorate with hay bales…real hay bales
26. A-corn squash with so much brown sugar and butter
27. Dinner in a pumpkin
28. Drink lots of pumpkin spice cappuccinos
29. Take Baby J trick-or-treating (and eat all of his candy corn)
30. Eat Pepsi roast…all the time
31. Lay around in pajamas and snuggle with our little one all day
32. Spend an afternoon at Heartland Farms
33. A dinner-and-movie theater date night, pre-Baby J, complete with buttery popcorn and lots of candy stuffed in my purse.
34. Make caramel apples for the first time
35. Game night! Potluck style.
36. Hold my baby.  Rock my baby.  Pat his footed-sleepered little butt as he snuggles in close.  Bundle him up with pretty blue blankets and take a walk around the neighborhood.

Tonight, we devoured a crockpot of Beau's famous, Hall of Fame Chili and finished the third season of True Blood.  Check and check!
