"a portrait of each of my children, once each week, in 2015"

Cruz: If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to teleport.  That way, when I find myself in that familiar state where my mind starts racing and the worries creep up and distract me from my present, I could close my eyes and end up here.  I would take Cruz with me often, and we would sit on that floury sand and watch the sunset, just as we did last week.  My boy loves the beach as much as I do and it seems to have the same power over him that I feel in me.  This was our first night at the beach and we were not dressed for swimming.  Five minutes in, Cruz was waist deep in the gulf, playing karate with the waves with a look of complete contentment on his face.  He didn't mind that soon his shorts were so wet they didn't stay up, and that he later had to go commando in nothing but his pajama shorts because I forgot to bring dry undies to the beach.  He just lost himself, I guess, and soon we jumped right in with him.

Mila: Her very first time in the sand was much as I anticipated.  I had forgotten how loud and overpowering the waves sound, especially when considering it from her level, and at first she was a little fearful of the magnitude of it all.  Soon, she gained a little more courage, kneeling down to grab a seashell or sinking her toes in the sand and watching her brother play.  The salty air made her beachy curls tighten in the best of ways and her blue eyes twinkled in the golden sun.
