Cruz's 9th Birthday

Cruz Bennett was fortunate to get to turn nine years old on a Saturday and we had an entire day at home to celebrate everything he is to us.  October birthdays are a wildcard - you might have a picture perfect fall day with all the beautiful colors and pumpkin patch fun, OR you might have a day like we had this year.  Blustery wind chills in the thirties, brisk winds, and the gloomiest sky.  I take pictures every year on the kids' birthdays and I said I don't ever remember our house being that dark on a birthday!  But the gloomy conditions didn't stop us from celebrating our boy with lots of color this year.  From the sprinkles on his stack of birthday pancakes to the stripes on his birthday shirt, we had a fun day doing all things birthday with our growing up boy.

Birthday pancakes, this year without have to rush through in order to get to school on time...

Old blog posts and birth stories read before digging into presents.  I'm always really thankful for the countless hours I've invested in documenting the stories of their baby years.  Cruz laughed hysterically as I narrated his first year at the strawberry patch, and we had a ball looking at old birthday party photos and reminiscing over pirate treasure hunts and Camp Cruz games.

Who knew Amazon had such fun and personalized birthday shirts?  No, that's not Cruz doing the floss, but it looks a lot like him!

He's growing up and was much harder to buy for this year.  He got a new X-Box game that I was hoping was similar to the old Sim City games I used to play (it's not), a new sweatshirt and stocking cap, Hagrid's Hut Lego set, and a board game he saw advertised on TV months ago that I happened to order right after he showed me.

After presents, we drove to Independence for Cruz's last soccer game of the fall season.  And he scored the first and only goal of the game within minutes of it starting!  After the game, we went out on a little family date night.  The Olive Garden for spaghetti and a slice of chocolate lasagna for the birthday boy, followed by a cozy theater and a showing of The Addams Family.  It was a good day celebrating our boy, and we were just getting started!
